Rowan Bangs

  Director/Actor

Rowan is an actor, director and musician from Guildford. Rowan directed Love and Understanding earlier in April 2005 for Nomad Theatre, Surrey and is now working, with Trident Theatre again, to take a new version to 2005's Edinburgh Fringe Festival. This will be his Fringe directing debut but he has had great success in previous years as an actor with his one man show ‘RED PETER’ 2003 [“A beautiful performance by Rowan Bangs… Brilliant” Three Weeks] and last year in Trident’s EQUUS [“a grounding performance by Rowan Bangs… the kind of earthy believability that is so rare” Three Weeks].

He gained a degree in Drama and Theatre Studies from The University of Surrey, Roehampton in 2002. Whilst studying he took a particular interest in the social aspects of theatre and it’s audience and was involved in various projects including a post-modern interpretation of Macbeth, a reinterpretation of Pirandello’s Six characters in search of an Author, commedia dell a’rte performances and as ‘King Herod’ in Jesus Christ Superstar.

Upon graduating Rowan worked with Martin Webb on ‘Les Enfant Terribles’s’ production of Berkoff’s West playing ‘Sid’ at The Space in London. He acted as an assistant director and reprised the role when it transferred to The Assembly Rooms for the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

Other credits include ‘Karl Brezner’ Popcorn, ‘Duke Of Exeter’ Henry V (both Nomads)‘Red Peter’ Kafka’s Red Peter (APE Productions), ‘The Man’ Special Delivery (Double Jack Films), ‘Paul Rice’ Jackpot (Poormans Productions), ‘Martin Dysart’ Equus (Trident/Moment), Lancelot Gobbo The Merchant Of Venice (Polesden Lacey Festival) and a tour of Pinnochio for The Cat’s Grin Theatre Company.

As a director Rowan was responsible for the London re-working of Kafka’s Red Peter at The Space. He also directed A Slice of Saturday Night for Les Enfant Terribles and The Chainsaw Manicure for The Nomads. In 2003 he worked with a youth group compiling and directing a show called Stuff and is hoping to work with them later this year for Stuff 2- Stuff Harder with a Vengeance.
